Symptom
•  Sign not responding to handheld remote.
•  Buttons get stuck.

Solutions
Test the handheld remote 
  1. Using any Android phone, start the camera application.
    Some iPhones will not work for this test so an Android phone is recommended.
  2. Locate the red lens on the top of the handheld remote.
  3. Point the red lens towards the camera and press any button on the remote. If the remote is working, you will see the infrared light turn on when the button is pressed.
    Basically the infrared light is not visible to the human eye but viewing the light through the camera lens will make it visible.
  4. If you do not see the infrared light, try the next troubleshooting step.
Batteries 
  1. Replace the batteries with a fresh new set.
  2. Make sure the batteries are inserted into the battery compartment facing the correct polarity direction.
  3. Restart the sign and try the remote again. 
Possible handheld remote damage
Shake the remote and listen for rattling. If present, do not try to repair. The remote should be replaced.

What are other possible causes and solutions?
Replacing the remote is a possible solution. But it is also possible, for an unknown reason, that the sign has an issue with the onboard receiving sensor.
